DIY Handmade Coin Rings
I’m always in the search for new DIY projects to try and when I heard about coin rings, I knew it was something worth checking out. Make DIY jewelry from old coins and wow anyone you show it too.
Coin rings will make the perfect gift idea to a loved one or a great statement DIY jewelry you can wear.
Before we start the tutorial, I must warn you. The process isn’t that all complicated but it takes time and a lot of it.
So if you don’t have a lot of patience, I’d suggest you gather a lot of it before starting this DIY craft project.
Coin Ring Tools:
- well-ventilated place
- face mask
- hard surface (for pounding)
- round file
- protective gloves
- buffing compound polish or metal polish
Step 1: Hammer the Edges
Hold your coin and start hammering gently at the edges while rolling it. You’re going to form a ‘mushroom’ with the edges.
This will take some time so be patient.
Step 2: Measure How Wide the Ring Will Be
Once you’ve tapped through the outer edges of the coin, you can stop when it shines and the layer is clearer. It’s up to you how wide you’d like your ring to be but you’d still have to consider that it should fit you or the person you’ll be giving it to.
Step 3: Drill the Center
Take your drill and drill right into the center of the coin. You’d like to make a hole where your file will fit.

Step 4: File the Coin
Start filing until you’ve completely removed the inside of the coin.
Step 5: Smooth the Inside
When you’re finally close to the edges of the coin, take your Dremel and use it on the inside of your coin ring. Do this until it’s almost smooth.
Step 6: Polish the Ring
If you don’t like the unpolished look of the finished coin ring, you can sand and polish it by using sandpaper. You can use 220-600 sandpaper to make the inside and the outside smooth and not have the hammered look.
To polish, take a piece of rag or cloth with buffing compound polish or metal polish and work it on the inside and outside of the ring.
